Acne Treatments:
Acne is an inflammatory condition of the skins oil glands. These glands (sebaceous glands) are located primarily on the face, chest, back and upper arms. The sebaceous glands secrete a thick, oily substance called sebum.
Hormonal changes that occur during puberty can stimulate the secretion of sebum by the oil glands as well as causing enlargement of the oil glands. Throughout adolescence the oil glands are often further stimulated resulting in acne breakouts and inflammation. Acne and rosacea can affect people into their 40’s and 50’s.
Acne can also occur in response to certain medications and exposure to various environmental pollutants such as oils and tobacco smoke. Certain cosmetics and facial creams that are not of the purest medical or pharmaceutical grade can also exacerbate acne.
In acne, the oil glands are visible as black or white dots on the skin’s surface. The black appearance (blackheads) is caused by the oxidation of the oil from the sebaceous (oil) gland, not by dirt. As the oil builds up, the swollen sebaceous gland often appears as a white blemish (whitehead). The primary problem is that the oil gland can become plugged up by a build-up of oil as well as skin cells in the tiny openings that are supposed to conduct oil to the surface.
As the irritation increases, red spots are produced and appear as acne blemishes. It is a false conception that acne is infectious. Acne cannot be transmitted to others.
Acne is also not an allergy. While acne itself is not an infection, a combination of sebum and desquamated cells that are commonly in an acne blemish can provide an environment favorable to bacteria.
